Greetings to all Astros Indoor Field Hockey Club Members!!!
Yes, that's correct ... indoor!!! The outdoor season is about 3/4 done, so it's
time to start planning again for indoor hockey, especially since some of you have already made some inquiries about indoor.
Please forward to others that may be interested that are not playing outdoor this season.
PLEASE REPLY BY AUGUST 31, 2004 AT THE LATEST!
For those who haven't played indoor hockey before, it is a different game from outdoor, but it's an exciting game and
a great way to improve your skills. Some examples of differences between indoor and outdoor include:
- There are only 5 field players & a kicking back or goalie on the pitch (so everyone gets a lot
more opportunity
to be involved in field play),
Indoor sticks are used, which are generally lighter and have a thinner head,
Hitting or raising the ball in field play is not allowed,
The ball can only be raised if it is a shot/flick at net,
The boards can be used as an additional player/pass,
Free pushes are given to the defending team if the ball goes off the end line (regardless of who touches it last), etc.,
All players, except for the kicking back/goalie, line up outside the net on the opposite side of where the opponent is
pushing the ball out on a defensive penalty corner,
More indoor rules and differences will be discussed at the Rules/Umpiring Clinic (generally scheduled for early October).

to balance things out.
Team reps will contact players which do not have E-mail and relay the info. to them.
Practices will start up the week of September 13th. More details will follow
once we get confirmation on who is playing and practicing.
The indoor season will start on Sun., Oct.
17th ... all games are played at Talisman Centre.

No money = no uniform
INDOOR PRACTICES (Start Week of Sept. 13th):
For the month of September, players who have played indoor before should
attend the Monday training sessions.
Players who are new or fairly new to the indoor game should
attend the Wednesday training sessions.
Starting mid-October, players may attend one or both of the Monday and Wednesday training sessions.
*For current Dinos athletes, the training sessions
are optional so that you don't over train.
- MONDAY PRACTICES - Held at the U of
C, Red Gym, from 6:45pm - 8:45pm, STARTING SEPT. 13TH and ending Dec. 6th.
- WEDNESDAY PRACTICES - Held at the
U of C Gold Gym, from 8:45pm - 10:30pm, STARTING SEPT. 15TH and ending Dec. 8th.
- They will be held every week, with the exception of Oct. 11th
(Thanksgiving).
- We realize that some of you aren't able to make all practices, but would encourage players
to attend as many indoor practices as possible.
- After the Christmas Break, Monday practices resume Jan. 10th
and run until Apr. 11th. The only closure will be Feb. 15th
for Family Day.
- A
Minimum of 8 Practices Are MANDATORY for All NEW INDOOR PLAYERS (for those who cannot attend on a regular basis).
As indoor is quite different from outdoor, it is VERY important and VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you attend as many
practices as possible as the skills and technique required to do the skills well are somewhat different as are the rules and
the game itself. In outdoor, players can 'get by' with minimal basic skills, there is a lot more action and it becomes
apparent very quickly if players do not have good basic INDOOR skills. Indoor is a fantastic game and will help players
really improve their tight stick and passing skills as well as improve game tactics, but practice is critical to this.
MANDATORY UMPIRING/RULES CLINIC:
- ALL players MUST attend a MANDATORY INDOOR UMPIRING
CERTIFICATION CLINIC that will be scheduled for early October.
- It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for players who have their
indoor umpiring certification to attend an Indoor RULES Clinic.
- EVERYONE who is playing indoor hockey will be scheduled for umpiring/shadowing assignments.
It will be the assigned player's responsibility to arrange to switch assigned umpiring/shadowing duties with other players
within the team.
- If a player fails to show up as scheduled (and has not arranged for a substitute), the
player will be required to pay $10.00 per incident.
- Each player will likely be assigned at least 2 or 3 matches to umpire or shadow.
- If you do not show up for the clinic and neither your team reps nor I have been contacted beforehand, we will presume that you wish to pay fee
1.
